General information

Welcome, or welcome back to Vulcan Plants, trade mark of André de Gruyter b.v., a leading nursery in Holland.

The Vulcan Plants trade mark is being used for growing Ficus, Helleborus and Pinus. Next to it we are owners of the exclusive breeder's rights for Holland, Belgium and Germany for spherical Pinus trees: Pinus Brepo® and Pinus Marie Bregeon.

We continuously try to improve the species in our current assortment. Furthermore we are always in search of new species to meet the ever changing demands of our clients.
Our assortment is composed in such a way that we can offer the consumer fresh green or colourful (indoor)plants througout the year.
Through auctions, flowershops and gardencentres our products find their way to the window-sill, garden and terrace. We do not sell directly to consumers.

Below you find more information on two of our most popular products: Pinus and Citrus.

Pinus Brepo® "Pierrick Bregeon", Pinus "Marie Bregeon"

These particularly beautiful spherical Pinus trees have been achieved through many years of intensive breeding. The trees are available in different trunk lengths with different spherical diameters. We also have twin, triple or multi spherical forms in our assortment.

In comparison with Pinus Brepo®, the needles of the Pinus Brepo® are 5 till 10 cm long, The size of the needles of the Pinus Marie Bregeon are 3 till 6 cm long. The needles of the Pinus Marie Bregeon are of a lighter fresh green colour. The spherical form is rounder and fuller. Furthermore the trees grow in a different speed: the Pinus Brepo® grows 8 till 10 cm each year, the Pinus Marie Bregeon grows 5 till 8 cm each year.

All varieties are very suitable for tub planting and can be used for several applications in a small or large garden. You don't need to trim the plant to maintain its natural spherical form. The green colour will stay all year around. During Autumn the oldest needles will lose their colour and fall off. The trees can stand hard (sea)wind without turning the needles brown and are not sensitive to any insects.

Permeable potting soil and water-draining conditions are of great importance, the plant doesn't like wet feet. In fact, a spot with bright sunlight is the most suitable place for this plant.

In case you like to plant the tree in the garden, you should make the planting hole twice as big as the roots are. Loosen the soil, and mix the soil with potting soil or peat. Keep the clod at ground level. Press the soil carefully and water the plant.
These Pinus varieties can stand bitter colds, temperatures till 25 degrees below zero are no problem. The plant doesn't need much water or fertiliser, although they like organic fertiliser a few times during Spring and Summer. The Pinus grows at its best on a sandy ground or light clay-ground with a moderate pH (approx. 5). Again, the soil must be well drained.

Pinus Brepo® can be bought continuously. Our latest species, Pinus Marie Bregeon, is available from August 2003.
The Pinus trees are obtainable in Holland, e.g. at several outlets of Praxis Tuin, Overvecht, Groenrijk, Europatuin en Intratuin.
